Icy Conditions – January 15

January 17th, 2019

Dear Parents,

Unfortunately, a freezing mist began around 7:00 a.m. this morning. Earlier in the morning, yet one more Winter Weather Advisory looked like it was impacting only areas around I-96 and to the north. Late changes in conditions and the timing of the treatment of roads made for unpredictable road surfaces all over the Grand Rapids area by the morning commute. One road might be relatively fine while the next intersection might be a sheet of ice. It was a difficult travel day.

We do the best we can to make prudent cancellation calls and to salt our parking lot and sidewalks, but it can be challenging to deal with circumstances beyond our control. Throughout the day, we continued to monitor the forecast and weather and road conditions, and we treated surfaces again before dismissal.

Please be careful (and let your children know to be careful) as parking lots and sidewalks–especially on days like this–may be very slippery. If children are prone to rush to or from the vehicle, they should be cautioned to walk carefully. The new paving stones are never treated for snow or ice, so please use the sidewalks as you enter and exit the building. Finally, if conditions in your local area make travel to school dangerous or uncomfortable, please consider keeping children home or delaying their arrival. The safety of our families and staff is of utmost importance to us.

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

Mr. Marth
