What We’re Learning
Language Arts–We are working on a three-paragraph essay about Africa’s geography.
Math – 3rd grade will work on place value and mental math. 4th grade is working on decimals.
Grammar – 3rd and 4th will focus on regular and irregular singular and plural nouns.
Latin – We will study Ch. 20.
Bible– We are reading about Saul and David.
Science – We are learning how to use a D cell to light a bulb.
Virtue of the Quarter – Lent is a season for HONESTY, a time to examine our hearts before God in order to confess our need for him, receive his mercy, and be reconciled more fully to him and to others. May you and your families be deeply blessed as we journey together this Lent.
Music – In music class we will be focusing on preparation of two songs for each class for Fine Arts Night – one will feature the students on guitar and the other will be a choral piece. As we have time we will also be exploring jazz and folk music. For the jazz component we will work through a curriculum about the early foundations of jazz by the great trumpet player Wynton Marsalis.
Art – We began 2023 with a study of Edward Hopper, an American painter. We imitated his style with a watercolor painting. Then we learned about Alexander Calder; many of the kids were excited to learn that downtown Grand Rapids has a Calder stabile. We built three dimensional stabiles and mobiles using abstract shapes. Recently, we began a unit on M.C. Escher and have been drawing tessellations. The Grand Rapids Public Museum recently advertised that they currently have a planetarium show on Escher works that may be an interesting complementary outing.
Homework
Bible Memory
Isaiah 58:11
The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
Use spelling time to instead work on studying your Africa Map. Our test (test 2) will be on ‘Northern’ and ‘East Africa’ songs.
