Virtue Update – FAITH

February 11th, 2022 by Trinitas Classical

What habits could your family practice to help grow your FAITH? Talk together about something you’d like to begin together this quarter, e.g., reading Scripture at dinner, singing a hymn or praise song after dinner or before bed, or keeping a family prayer journal. For more ideas, see the Home Materials that were sent with your student. They may also be found in the Helpful Links section of the weekly newsletter.

Showing Respect Is the Winning Move

February 4th, 2022 by Trinitas Classical

For better or worse, kids love competition. (Adults too!) Sports and games, at their best, require us to be disciplined, patient, and focused. To succeed, we must train body, mind, and soul. One’s skill is evident in victory, but one’s character is revealed in defeat.

Chess Club provides an opportunity for our students to learn about sportsmanship. We encourage you to ask about the matches they played. Along with “Did you have fun?” and “Did you win?”, you might also ask “Did you help someone learn more about chess today?” and “Did you thank your opponent for a good match?”

Interesting fact: Over the years, people have played “correspondence chess” by mail, fax, and even carrier pigeon! Our digital age offers even more ways to play the game. We hope our students will keep playing even after Chess Club wraps up next week.

Virtue Update – FAITH

February 4th, 2022 by Trinitas Classical

As we focus on FAITH this quarter, keep this beautiful image from Zephaniah in mind:
“The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

May we all be quieted in God’s love. May we hear Him singing over us.

CCE Corner – Made for Love, part II

January 27th, 2022 by Trinitas Classical

In our previous post, we encouraged our readers to listen to a reflection on Canto 17 of Dante’s Purgatorio. In this post, we draw your attention to Canto 18.* Here, Dr. Steve Boyer examines the moral psychology of love. He takes us on a journey inside the soul from attraction through imagination to inclination to quest. If one’s reason does not actively stand guard in the face of temptation, Dr. Boyer observes, the soul finds itself captive to worldly passions. If you do not listen to his 12-minute reflection, do at least hear Dr. Boyer‘s words about the dangers of distraction:

“Time is love. What you do with your time shows what you really love. And it ultimately becomes what you love. So, don’t be content with mere entertainment. Don’t doze off. Wake up! What are you giving yourself to?”

*Again, even if you have not been reading Dante’s Comedy or listening to the lectures, this is worth a listen! We recommend parents listen first, before sharing with their student, as not all content may be appropriate.

Chess Club – Learning the Game and More

January 20th, 2022 by Trinitas Classical

We strive to be a school where friendships form and flourish, and particularly between classrooms, among older and younger students. Chess Club is a great opportunity for developing logic skills, of course, but it’s an even better opportunity to build relationships. It brings the whole school together. We value the learning, the mentoring, and the fun that Chess Club brings to our classrooms every winter.
