CCE Corner – Perseverance

November 8th, 2020

Many of us are feeling some fatigue. The Coronavirus has brought significant losses to many and has made nearly everything we do or would like to do more difficult or even impossible. When this CCE Corner is posted, we may not yet know who will be president in 2021. Even when we do know the results of the election, we may still feel fatigued by this long and tiring political season. Along with this, we face cultural upheaval which gives every indication of continuing. Speaking around the time of the birth of our nation, Samuel Adams observed: “The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance.” The same is true today, and so, as we begin the second quarter, we turn our focus to the virtue of perseverance.

The idea of perseverance may bring to mind images of an athlete training, a musician practicing, a farmer plowing his field, or soldiers courageously performing their duty, or it may bring to mind the simple childhood poem, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again…” The verb “persevere” comes from the Latin “perseverare” which means “continue steadfastly, persist” so all of these images seem appropriate, but there is an even deeper meaning found within the classical Christian tradition. Christian writers often used a synonym for perseverance–“diligence”. The Latin root for diligence is “diligere” which means to respect or esteem, to love. It may sound strange, but perseverance or diligence is not merely staying the course or gutting it out, it is an expression of love.

Prepared for Any Weather?

November 8th, 2020

Snowflakes one day. Seventy degrees another day. November weather is predictably unpredictable. Please make sure your child is equipped to handle colder temps at recess and outdoor lunches. We will continue to bring students outside for lunch even as the temperatures dip, so long as the overall conditions are favorable.

Please also remember that all drinking fountains in the school are covered. Students must bring a water bottle with them every day! Water bottles should be labeled clearly so they don’t land in the lost and found.

School Picture Orders

November 8th, 2020

School pictures have arrived from Lifetouch and are going home with students this week. Retakes are scheduled for Monday, November 30. The 7th and 8th graders will also have their pictures taken that day.

Virtue Focus – PERSEVERANCE

November 8th, 2020

Our virtue focus for the second quarter is PERSEVERANCE. An important part of perseverance is gaining the proper perspective. St. Paul helps us to do that in his letter to the Romans: “And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Watch for our Home Connection poster next week with ideas to help you talk about and practice this virtue together as a family.

Parent Support for Online Learning

November 2nd, 2020

In the event that your son or daughter must learn online, the active partnership of home and school is even more critical than when they are in school. Here are a few practical things we ask of parents:

  • Provide access to adequate technology, including a printer and a strong internet connection.
  • Check in with your child regularly to ensure they are on time and present for online class sessions.
  • Be available and willing to proctor tests, as needed.
  • Monitor your child’s well-being and virtual engagement and reach out to a teacher right away if concerns arise.

Color Day – Friday, November 6

November 2nd, 2020

The end of each quarter is a Color Day! Students will be allowed to wear appropriate, non-uniform attire to school. (Shirts must have sleeves.) They should wear P.E. shoes as time may be spent in the gym. Please contact the office if you have questions.

Please remember that starting November 1, shorts may not be worn to school. Navy or gray leggings (no black) may be worn under skirts and jumpers.

Helpful Hints for a Successful Speech Meet

October 23rd, 2020

We are looking forward to another great Speech Meet on November 18, even if it looks a little different this year. Selections are due today! Once your child’s selection has been approved by his/her teacher, it is time to start memorizing, practicing, and polishing. Here are the categories our judges will take into consideration:

Eyes – Comfortably engages audience with eye contact
Body Language – Excellent posture and position; engaging
Expression – Face and voice effectively and appropriately support the material
Enunciation/Fluency – Loud, clear speech; fluent phrasing
Memory/Accuracy – Fully memorized; no prompting needed

While we will not be able to welcome guests to attend this year, we are looking into ways to record the speeches so parents can view them.

Virtue Focus – COMPASSION

October 23rd, 2020

As the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle observed, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence [virtue] then, is not an act, but a habit.” It may seem simple, but it’s not easy–we become compassionate not by a single kind act but by repeatedly acting in compassionate ways.
