CCE Corner – ‘Rithmetic: STEM at Trinitas, Part I

April 22nd, 2021

In this post, we look at the third “R” of education: ‘Rithmetic. In our next post, we’ll include a discussion of science and logic at Trinitas to complete the picture of how our classical school measures up in the area of STEM. At the outset, we should be honest that classical schools may often be thought of as great books programs or humanities schools. From the time of its founding in 2006, however, Trinitas was committed to providing our students an excellent education in the sciences. Not content to simply adopt the curricula many classical schools were already using, we were somewhat “cutting edge” for classical, and even non-classical, schools.* We think our math and science programs map nicely onto the grammar, logic, and rhetoric stages of the Trivium.

When choosing a math curriculum, it seemed to make some sense to find out what the best students in the world are using. Math students in Singapore are consistently at the top of The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). These students use the Primary Mathematics Series (otherwise known as Singapore Math). Lest we commit a logical fallacy, we won’t assume that simply using the same curriculum will produce the same results (there are very likely multiple factors at work), but it is probably fair to be optimistic about the possibilities. When we examined Singapore math pilot studies in the US, we found that students were, on average, a grade ahead of their peers. And, they liked math more. We’ve found this to be true of our math students as well over the last fifteen years—they are typically advanced in math, do very well on standardized tests, and go on to honors and AP math tracks in high school. And, importantly, a large percentage enjoy the subject.

Virtue Update – LOYALTY

Our virtue of the quarter is LOYALTY. Woodrow Wilson said, “Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice.” Talk together about ways to show loyalty to each other in your home.

COVID Update – Spring Break Travel

April 1st, 2021

With the recent and concerning spike in the number of COVID cases in Kent County, especially in children, we are asking parents to exercise extra caution if traveling over Spring Break by airplane or to a location where they do not avoid crowds.

Many schools are moving to virtual or hybrid learning for the week after break, but we intend to continue learning in person. So that we can avoid, if possible, COVID exposures and quarantines in the weeks following break, we are asking everyone to use the safety protocols recommended for these high-risk environments and to keep home after break any students who 1) have spent time over break with anyone who showed any sign of illness, or 2) spent time over break with anyone who tested positive for COVID, or 3) exhibit any symptom of illness.

If any of the above criteria apply to your child(ren) by the end of break, please contact the office when the school reopens on Monday, April 12, so that we can provide a return-to-school timeline.

As a reminder, students who exhibit any symptoms of illness while at school will be screened for COVID-relevant symptoms and sent home as directed. We will be exercising greater caution during the week following break in an effort to keep all classrooms open to in-person learning. God-willing, the path forward could–and really should–be downhill once we clear the week after Spring Break.

A Day with Altus Adventures – April 21

April 1st, 2021

Trinitas is working with Altus Adventures to create a fun outdoor event at school for all students in Grades K-8 close to the end of April. The day will be filled with activities that promote healthy social habits, friendship, cooperation, and servant leadership among and between students of all grade levels. Our students have spent much of the year apart from other classes, and this event will serve to rekindle former friendships and facilitate new friendships between students of all grades. Weather permitting, we are planning to combine this event with Rome’s birthday celebration on Wednesday, April 21. If needed, Wednesday, April 28, is our alternate.
