CCE Corner – A Life of Virtue

September 17th, 2020

Welcome back to our Classical Christian Education Corner! In the year ahead, watch for short pieces about classical Christian education, from the philosophical to the practical. We’ll include reflections on Scripture, poetry, philosophy, and literature, summaries of relevant books, articles, and podcasts, and “best practice” tips from fellow travelers on this journey toward “lives well-lived.”

In our first CCE Corner for the year, we begin with the topic of Virtue. Trinitas was formed with the purpose of preparing students for lives well-lived. But what is a life “well-lived”? A life with physical health? Pleasure? Friends? Wealth? Power? Honor? A very quick history lesson shows that a theme throughout classical and Christian thought is that whatever else you think is part of the good life, a life well-lived must be a life of virtue. Ancient philosophers identified four Cardinal Virtues: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. “Cardinal” comes from the Latin word “cardo” which means “hinge.” The Cardinal Virtues are considered the primary virtues, the pivot on which the other virtues turn or depend. These four virtues were later incorporated into Christian moral teaching during the Middle Ages by thinkers like Thomas Aquinas, and three Theological Virtues were added: faith, hope, and charity (love).

NOTICE – Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

September 13th, 2020

Our morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up routines are off to a good start! To help streamline the process, we encourage you to review the following reminders.

For arrival time, only use the drop-off lane if you will be there for a minute (i.e., “unload and go”). If your passengers aren’t ready to jump out of the vehicle with their things or need a hand, please park in the designated areas.

To save time for everyone and to make sure students can simply enter the school upon arrival at the door, students should be wearing their masks before they exit the vehicle. Walking and carrying a backpack and putting on a mask all at once is more challenging than one might think!

Due to windshield glare, we cannot see faces or name plates that are sitting on the dash at dismissal time. Please press your name plate (or your smiling face) against the windshield when you are one of the first several cars in line.

PSF Parent Coffee

September 13th, 2020

PSF will host a parent coffee Monday, September 14, starting at 8:00 a.m. It will be held outside, near the Trinitas entrance. Coffee, tea, juice, and baked goods provided. Carefully prepared food and beverages will be served. Please join us to connect with friends, old and new.

Masks – Clips and Spares

September 13th, 2020

In order to keep routines (e.g., going out to recess and returning again) as simple and predictable as possible, we are asking that students in grades K-6 use clips to hold their masks when not in use or use gaiter-style face coverings that can be worn around the student’s neck or on their head when not needed to cover their face.

We also strongly encourage students to keep a spare mask at school. We have already seen that masks can get dirty, wet, or lost during the day.

Prayer Team

September 13th, 2020

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

During the shut-down last spring, a group of Trinitas parents and staff formed a prayer team to pray regularly for our community. This group “meets” only via email. One of our deans of students, Anne Poortenga, sends out regular emails to share Scripture and items for the prayer team to bring before our Lord. If you would like to join the prayer team and/or if you have any prayer requests, please contact Mrs. Poortenga.

A Reflection To Begin the Year

September 7th, 2020

“When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:34

What a fitting verse and image for us as we prepare to welcome students back to school tomorrow. As we anticipate the year ahead, all of us may be feeling a little like lost sheep. Praise God we are not without a shepherd! Ours is the Good Shepherd who knows each of us by name and has compassion on us. May we be secure in that love, open to all He has to teach us, and willing to love those around us.

Please know that the Trinitas staff and the prayer team are praying for you all. May you rest well tonight knowing to whom we each belong, and may tomorrow bring much joy to you and your children. We are excited to start this new school year and to continue the work of preparing students for lives well-lived.
